Air Malta offers 200 flights to over 30 European, North African and Mediterrean destinations each week, a feat that no other airline on the small island has accomplished. In March 1973, Air Malta was founded by the Maltian House of Representatives and one year later began offering flight service to destinations such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, Rome, Frankfurt, Paris and Tripolis. Soon afterwards, the company closed a deal with Boeing to add 3 new aircraft to their fleet, effectively expanding their flight plan. Air Malta's current flight plan includes over 30 destinations and is connected to some of Europe's largest metropolitan areas. After the island received EU membership, many new opportunities were immediately opened up to the airline, including charter flights to popular vacation destinations. In 2006, The Association of European Airlines recognized Air Malta as the air carrier with the least amount of lost luggage, at only 4,1 missing pieces of luggage per 1,000 passengers.
