Malaysian airline AirAsia is the biggest low cost carrier in Asia and supports regular flight service to around 65 destinations across the Asian continent. Since starting life in 1993 as part of a government owned company and launching flight operations in 1996, AirAsia has experienced rapid expansion to today confirm its position as the leading low cost airline in Asia. Following a period of financial difficulties the airline was purchased by Tony Fernandes in 2001. A reorganization of the business model led to financial improvement, enabling the route network and fleet to be expanded and modernized. From the central hub in Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia connects Malaysia to the rest of the continent. Sister airline AirAsia X offers international flights to a range of worldwide destinations including London and Melbourne with plans to develop the route network to add further global centers. In 2010 the airline was able to offer the cheapest flights in the world measured by cost per kilometer for each seat. Based on strong financial performance and a reputation for high quality customer service and rapid turnaround times, the future promises to be bright for AirAsia.
