This arid, desert state, speckled by cactus, rock and gorge lives up to its name. Arizona is a completely landlocked state in the United States' southeastern corner, surrounded by New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California and Mexico. Of it's total area, only 15% is privately owned. The rest is made up of public forests, park land, state trust land and Native American reservations. Definitely the most defining feature of Arizona is the Grand Canyon. Massive, enchanting, mesmerizing, the Grand Canyon is a huge gorge carved out of northern Arizona over millions of years by the Colorado River. The entire canyon is about 277 miles long, ranges from four to 18 miles wide and keeps a depth of around one mile through-out. Listed as one of the world's Seven Natural Wonders, the Grand Canyon lies mostly within the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first National Parks. Another must see site is the famous Barringer Meteorite Crater, one of the most well-preserved meteorite impact sites in the world, situated on the Colorado Plateau, it is around a mile wide, more than 500 feet deep and rises an enormous 150 feet above the surrounding area with house-sized boulders scattered all around.
