Dubai is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. It is like an independent city-state and is the most modern and progressive emirate in the UAE. The United Arab Emirates is the land of white sandy beaches and shopping, however there are also desert wildernesses and mountains on offer. The UAE is safe and clean and though exotic culture is on offer, the westerner will feel perfectly at home. The Islamic dress code is not compulsory. To protect them from the hot dry climate most Emirati men wear a kandura, an ankle-length white shirt woven from wool or cotton, and most Emirati women wear an abaya, a black over-garment covering most parts of the body. Western clothing is predominate because of the large expat population.
