Formed close to Seattle in 1981 following a merger between Air Oregon and Horizon Airlines, Horizon Air began offering regional flights in the Pacific Northwest. During the 1980s, acquisitions of Transwestern Airlines, a partnership with Canadian airplane manufacturer de Haviland and code share agreements with United Airlines led to an eventual takeover by Alaska Airways in 1986. Most Horizon Air destinations are in the western US, however the airline also offers flights to Canada and code share agreements with American Airlines, Delta and the parent company Alaska Airlines greatly expand the list of destinations. The Mileage Plan is the frequent flyer program of Horizon Air, Alaska Airlines and is partnered with various Oneworld and SkyTeam members. MVP and MVP Gold are the two levels of membership, while a unique feature of flights with Horizon Air is the freshly brewed Starbucks coffee served on board.
