Indiana is one of the lesser-lauded states, but it only takes a little determination to find out that there is more to the ‘Land of Indians' than meets the eye. The north's Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is the perfect place to escape to nature for a relaxed stroll or a more energetic hike. Down south you can reaffirm which is a stalactite and which a stalagmite in one of the state's show caves, and drop by small and endearing towns such as Nashville, a quiet town with a surprisingly active artistic community, and Columbus, a small city with an abundance of modern architecture. If it's something livelier than an afternoon out that you want however, then head to Bloomington. The students from the Indiana University Bloomington are what give the city its youthful lifeblood, and the culture, dining and nightlife on offer all display a refreshing variety.

The state capital, Indianapolis, is best known for the Indianapolis 500 motor race but prides itself on being a hub of all sorts of sporting activity, with top quality sporting arenas offering a wide range of matches, races and competitions to keen spectators. A number of museums, shopping centers, a zoo and the White River State Park mean that the city appeals to more than just sports fans, so those who have no interest in car races or football games still find themselves at home in Indianapolis. Indiana is not a state of national landmarks or metropolitan cities, instead it is a state which rather refreshingly, is to be appreciated on personal experience alone.
