The German airline LTU was for a long time among the largest airline companies in Germany. It has been a complete affiliate of Air Berlin since 2007, which announced that the trademark LTU will cease to be used. Today, LTU performs only international long range flights under the Air Berlin banner, with all the destination are outside Europe. The airline roots back to 1955, when Kurt Conle founded the Lufttransport-Union. The first LTU flight went to Sicilia one year later. At that time several hundred passengers were transported per year. In the 60s the idea of an integrated touristic corporation came up, following which LTU began offering a full range of tourist services in 1964.
