Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria and situated in the north east of the island. It is the biggest and most cosmopolitan city of the Canary Islands with a lot to offer any tourist. Gran Canaria Airport is one of the busiest in Spain and is close to the centre of Las Palmas. Within the center are a number of historical districts: Vegueta, pronounced an UNESCO World Heritage Site, has many manors, museums and galleries and Triana is a popular pedestrianized shopping area. On the other side of Las Palmas is the longest stretch of beach in the city, Las Canteras. Alternatively, visitors can take a stroll and explore the other part of the coastline which is filled with docks. In the evenings Las Palmas offers live entertainment in the form of music and street artists in Parque Santa Catalina as well as being home to various theatres, clubs and restaurants serving local delicacies.
