Luxair is an airline based in Luxembourg offering over 50 worldwide destinations. From the main hub in Luxembourg, the airline supports various cities in different countries. Following heavy losses and the rising price of oil, the airline was restructured and modernized in 2006 to bring it into the modern generation. The company is predominantly owned by the national government, although German airline Lufthansa also controls a share. Luxair specializes in direct flights for business and vacation destinations. In the 1950s, Luxembourg was the center of various European institutions, creating a demand for flights to and from other European capitals. Founded in 1948, the Luxembourg Airlines Company became known as Luxair in 1961. The first routes connected Luxembourg with Paris, while the popularity of flights allowed Luxair to modernize the fleet and expand the network of destinations. The majority of flights connect European capitals such as London, Berlin, Rome, Prague and a large concentration of cities in Germany, Italy and Spain.
