Martinair is a Dutch airline which has belonged to the Air France-KLM group since the end of 2008. The airline supports daily flights between Miami and Amsterdam and can offer over 50 destinations outside of Europe in connection with KLM. Dutch pilot Martin Schröder founded the airline in 1958 under the name Martin's Air Charter. After a successful start, he sold 49% of the company just five years later. In 1966, the company adopted the current name. Martinair operates both as a passenger and a freight airline. As early as 1999, KLM began trying to take over the airline but the deal was impeded by regulations and legal processes until the takeover was completed in 2008. Together with KLM, Martinair offers over 50 worldwide destinations including Miami, Orlando and Seattle along with other cities worldwide. From the base in Amsterdam, Martinair connects the Netherlands with the world. Uniquely, there are currently no passenger flights to European destinations. Since the takeover, passengers have been able to build up points for Flying Blue, the Air France and KLM frequent flyer program. The airline boasts a proud reputation for special meals and services on board for children.
