John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is the largest airport serving New York City and the Tri-State Area. It is also the single busiest international airport in the United States. Formerly known as Idlewild, the airport was renamed after the late president John F. Kennedy in 1963. More than 90 airlines operate flights in and out of JFK, which is used as a hub by American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. It is also the base of Jet Blue Airways. In 2009, over 45 million passengers passed through JFK's seven operational terminals (Terminal 6 is now closed), with three million on the London route alone.
