Every day, Spanair operates around 330 flights, of which approximately 40 are charter and 290 are direct. Each year, more than 11 million passengers are carried within Spain and Western Europe. In 1986, Spanair was founded with the aim of being a charter airline. Not until two years later were the first regular flights launched from the home airport on Palma de Mallorca. In 1997, Spanair began operating their first intercontinental flights, however since 2002 these have only been available as codeshares. The destination network expanded vastly in 2003 when the airline became a member of the Star Alliance. Today, the majority of destinations are within Spain and surrounding islands, however airports in London, Dublin and Berlin are among the continental destinations. Currently there are limited flights to Asia and West Africa, while no North American flights exist although codeshare agreements with Air Canada and US Airways facilitate transatlantic travel. Spanair offers customers a punctuality guarantee for flights within Spain. If the plane is late, guests receive various discounts for future flights.
