With a central hub in Lisbon and over 6 million passengers a year, TAP Portugal is the largest Portuguese airline. The airline is the European leader in flights to Brazil with around 40 flights a week connecting the two continents. Geographically, Portugal is a gateway between Europe, North Africa and South America and the flight network specializes in these routes. The airline was founded in 1945 and began offering commercial flights a year later from Lisbon to Madrid. By the end of the 1940s, flight service to Paris and London had been introduced. Until 1985, TAP Portugal operated its own charter flights before the foundation of Air Atlantis which overtook this part of the business. Upon becoming part of the Star Alliance in 2005, the destination network was greatly expanded. With around 65 destinations, around half in Africa and the Americas, customers can access Newark Airport as well as major European cities. To provide the full range of pricing options and levels of comfort, TAP Portugal offers 5 distinct booking classes including discount, basic, classic, plus and executive. While not available for all flights, the different levels offer various service and comfort facilities. Frequent flyer program Victoria offers bonuses and benefits to regular customers.
